How to Pray
“How Bishop Barron Learned to Pray” by Bishop Barron & Father Mike:
God Listens to Our Prayers
[Luke 11:11-13 NKJV]
11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”
How to Pray
[Matthew 6:5-13 NKJV]
5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
When Two or More Pray
[Matthew 18:19-20 NKJV]
19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
Act of Contrition
O, my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of Thy just punishment: but most of all, because they offend Thee, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more, and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen
Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
Before Meals
Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen
I’m Not Worthy
Lord, I’m not worthy that you should enter my roof. But only say the Word and I shall be healed.
Our Father
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Prayers for the Dying
For Calmness: "Father God, give us the peace that passes all understanding. Help us to journey with you into eternal life, no more pain, no more weeping, only Light and Love. Amen".
For God's Presence: "Lord Jesus, we come to You today asking Your peace and grace for our beloved friend who is preparing from life to the next... May she rest in comfort in Your loving arms forever".
For Strength: "Almighty God, the shadow of death is upon [name]. Lead them to your peace and give them comfort during this difficult time. Let your love calm the souls of those who are passing".
Prayers for the Sick
For Strength & Peace: "Heavenly Father, we lift up all those who are facing various illnesses. Give them hope and courage, comfort their pain, calm their fears, and surround them with Your peace. In Jesus' name, Amen".
Invoking Jesus: "Lord Jesus, We turn to You in this time of illness... Let the warmth, peace and healing power of Your Spirit fill us... Heal us according to Your Divine Will, Lord Jesus, and enable us to serve You with a healthy body, soul, and spirit".
A Traditional Blessing
May God the Father bless you. May God the Son comfort you. May God the Holy Spirit enlighten you. And may almighty God bless you all, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen"
Saint Michael the Archangel
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Serenity Prayer
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
